1869 Pattern 25C J-721 Silver reeded edge NGC PF66
Longacre's design. A deep golden to silver-gray toned gem with strong underlying mirror luster and bold devices on both sides. Nicely struck for the date, this has a petite head of Liberty who wears a rolled-over liberty cap; in her hair are three large stars, while at the base of the hair a ribbon inscribed IN GOD WE TRUS. Certainly a coin that gets your attention where fullness of design is concerned, as well as strong eye-appeal.

Nearly every pattern by mint engraver James B. Longacre for a Liberty head uses the identical portrait. However, this is often masked by the artist's choice of head covering: feathered headdress, Liberty cap, hair tied in a bun at back; and several varieties with coronet above the brow. The present interpretation, that having Liberty posed in a "night cap" with its top angled forward and stars on the headband, is one of Longacre's finest. Isn't it a shame it never made it onto a regular issue. (#60948)
The Endangered Species Collection
