1869 Half Dime. Judd-693. Aluminum. Rarity-7. Proof-66 PCGS. CAC. OGH.
Fully brilliant, highly lustrous, and largely cameo-like. Obverse: regular-issue die of the year. Reverse: same comment. The frosted motifs and reflective fields complement each other nicely in this gem Proof off-metal pattern. The strike is sharp throughout the obverse but flat near the top of the reverse wreath. If selected for eye appeal alone, this one would take high honors, and CAC agrees. These were sold in sets that included copper, J-692; aluminum, J-693; and nickel, J-694. There are about a half dozen copper pieces known, with the same guesstimate for aluminum and nickel strikes. PCGS has listed three individual pieces, including the present specimen, while NGC has listed just 2 specimens in differing grades. Here is a rare prize for a serious pattern specialist or an advanced half dime enthusiast. Choice for the grade.

PCGS Population: 1; none finer.
