1869-Dated Post Civil War Reconstruction Period, Rare STEVENS PATENT PLAYING CARDS titled, “Liberty. LAW. Protection. Habeas Corpus. / Patented, Sep. 21, 1869.” Complete Deck of 56 Cards, in its original paper Wrapper, Choice Near Mint.
Very Rare Complete Game Deck of 56 Playing Cards including its Title card. The Title card reads: “Stevens Patent / Liberty. LAW. Protection. Habeas Corpus. / Patented Sep. 21, 1869.” There are four suits (silver, gold, red, and white) each having 14 imaged cards (1-King, 2-Queen, 3-Prince, 4-Princess, 5-Writ, 6-Sheriff, 7-Duke, 8-Duchess, 9-Marquis, 10-Earl, 11-Viscount, 12-Baron, 13-Baroness, 14-Little Tom). This highly Patriotic American designed backs are printed in brown displaying an American Heraldic Eagle with Shield. Overall quite excellent with no hint of wear on the cards. We previously sold a similar deck of 1869 Stevens Patent Playing Cards in our EAHA Auction of October 22, 2005, Lot 753 graded Near Mint with gilt edges, which brought $1,300. This Post Civil War Reconstruction Period political card game is Extremely Rare, especially in such excellent condition. The deck comes housed complete, still in its original paper wrapper which is slightly torn and somewhat soiled on the blank edge and back, not affecting the printed front.
