1869 Assay Commission Medal. With Stars. PR63 Uncertifi
1869 Assay Commission Medal. With Stars. PR63 Uncertified. Julian AC-6, R.6. Aluminum, 33.4 mm., 66.4 grains. The obverse has a seated figure of Columbia facing left, her left hand resting on a shield, and her right hand supported by her knee. A pole behind her shoulder holds a Liberty cap. The allegorical figure is surrounded by 13 stars. The reverse has a wreath enclosing the three line inscription ANNUAL ASSAY 1869. The top of the wreath is bound by a scroll that is inscribed LET US HAVE PEACE. The surfaces have lovely light gray color with fully mirrored fields and desirable cameo contrast. The lower right obverse and lower left reverse are weakly detailed.
All known examples of this variety have a die crack from the border to star 5. Another variety exists without stars in the obverse field, but it is not known with certainty which one came first. Julian believes that the variety without stars was actually distributed to members of the Assay Commission in 1869, and the variety with obverse stars was produced primarily to meet the limited demand of coin collectors.
