1869 5C Five Cent / Indian Cent Mule, Judd-691, Pollock-748, Unique, PR64 PCGS. The obverse has the adopted Shield nickel design, muled with an 1869 Indian cent die. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Described in the ninth edition of Judd as a "nonsensical mule for the numismatic trade." The USPatterns.com website states: "This is a fantasy muling or mint error combining the obverses of the regular circulation one cent and five cent dies struck on a nickel planchet. Pollock lists this under cents whereas Judd lists it under 5 cents. We consider it a 5 cent piece since it was struck on a nickel 5 cent planchet. The coin is unique ..." Because of die opposition and the striking of this piece in nickel there is considerable localized weakness on each side. Light in color, the surfaces are an even pale gray with no mentionable abrasions.
Ex: A.S.
