1869 $5 --Struck thru Thread Reverse--PR64 Cameo PCGS. This is a spectacular Proof gold half eagle with brilliant yellow-gold surfaces. The devices have frosty yellow luster, with deeply mirrored fields around. Critical examination of the surfaces reveal the slightest wispy hairlines that keep it out of a Gem grade level. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of this rarity is the reverse indentation, exactly as it was struck. A tiny thread was trapped between the reverse die and the planchet when this coin was struck, and now an indentation in the surface of the reverse remains. It starts at the border above the N of UNITED, curves through the top of I and the upright of T, then curls around through the upper two leaf tips. From there, it is visible through the field and into the eagle's lower feathers, the arrow feather below the shield point, and eventually across the middle arrow shaft, arrow head, and R of AMERICA.
It is not known the exact population of survivors, although the original mintage was limited to just 25 coins. It seems reasonable to assume that about half that number still exist today, or about 10 to 12 coins. We do not recall seeing or hearing of any others that were struck through a piece of thread like this example, although it certainly seems to be a possibility. Alternatively, it is also a possibility that the thread may have remained embedded in the coin's surface for some time, thus suggesting that this example may be unique.
