<B>1869 $3 AU55 NGC.</B></I> In their <I>Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins,</B></I> Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) call Longacre's three dollar gold piece 'the rich man's three-cent piece," because one of its initial purposes was to facilitate the purchase of sheets of three cent postage stamps. They also note that the 1869 three dollar gold piece is a challenge for date collectors due to its small mintage. This is an attractive Choice AU coin that has the usual semi-reflective luster in the fields. The predominantly mustard-gold surfaces have distinct reddish accents.
