1869 $3 AU55 NGC. In their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth call Longacre's three dollar gold piece 'the rich man's three-cent piece," because one of its initial purposes was to facilitate the purchase of sheets of three cent postage stamps. They also note that the 1869 three dollar gold piece is a challenge for date collectors due to its small mintage. NGC and PCGS have graded a total of 255 of this issue in all grades, with only 50 coins receiving a grade of AU55 and 121 pieces graded higher. This is an attractive coin that has the usual semi-reflective finish in the fields. Each side has a light overlay of reddish color and deeper red outlines the devices.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
