1869 $20 AU58 NGC.<p>The 1869 is the third most difficult Philadelphia Type Two Double Eagle in high grades, trailing only the 1868 and the 1870. Most surviving pieces are seen in the XF40 to AU53 range. It is scarce in AU55, very scarce in AU58, and rare in Uncirculated. We believe this issue is extremely undervalued in AU58 and higher. Current Coin World Trends is just $4,850 in MS60 and $7,500 in MS62. This seems like quite a bargain when one considers the popularity of Type Two Double Eagles and the genuine scarcity of the 1869 in MS60 and better condition. While showing little evidence of actual use in circulation, the surfaces on this piece are very "choppy" with innumerable tiny abrasions on each side. Well struck around the peripheries, the hair curls around Liberty's face are softly defined, as one would expect, and each side has rich orange-gold coloration. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
