Seated Liberty is featured in the same fashion as the regular issue Legend Obverse design of 1860 to 1891 dimes. The date is absent on the obverse, but resides below a solid horizontal line on the reverse. Above the line lies SIL. 9 and below that, NIC. 1. This relatively simple reverse design is a reference to the metallic content intended for the coin. Although this is listed as the first reverse by Judd, it is actually the second striking. There is a die scratch at the base of Liberty's feet that is not on the striking with the SIL NIC COP reverse. The fact that there is no die scratch on the SIL NIC COP pieces proves they were struck before the present piece as well as all other coins with this obverse that have the die scratch. After the experiments with the Koulz (Roulz?) alloy were unsuccessful, it was logical for the Mint to try an alloy of 90% silver and 10% nickel since that is the composition of coin silver. Because of the total incompatibility of silver and nickel, very few, if any, were struck in this alloy/mixture. Coins were struck in copper and coin nickel; the nickel strikes have been mistaken to be the test alloy. This piece is struck in copper and has a reeded edge. The reeding on this coin is different than that on all other coins struck from this obverse die; being similar to that on the regular dime issues. The surfaces have bright variegated orange and cherry-red color, and the coin has a specific gravity of 8.93. Lacquer has been removed from the surfaces, revealing bright, fiery-red mint luster. A few small marks are scattered over each side that account for the non-Gem grade. This is a very rare pattern, and may in fact be even rarer than its R.7 rating.<BR><I>Ex: Ruby Collection (Superior, 2/75), lot 883. In addition to this piece, other examples can be found in the Byron Reed Collection and the Western Heritage Museum and at the J. C. Mitchelson Connecticut State Library Collection.</B></I> </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed>No Prior Data Recorded </TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
