1869<$10> Ten Dollar, Judd-781, Pollock-866, High R.7, PR64 Brown NGC. This die trial issue is of the ten dollar gold piece, but it is struck in copper with a reeded edge. Although such issues are called "die trials," this was a time of Mint shenanigans of various kinds, and many such pieces were made for sale to advanced collectors or to augment the cabinets of highly placed Mint officials. Swirling rose-brown and sky-blue colors enrich this magnificently struck near-Gem. No hairlines or contact is evident; a small spot below star 8 is of little concern. The Judd reference estimates that only three specimens of this rare die trial are known.
