1868 Silver 3C PCGS PF65 CAM
The silver three-cent pieces of 1851-53 were struck in a composition of .750 silver and .250 copper. In 1854, and throughout the remaining years of the series, the coins were produced from a composition of .900 silver and .100 copper, thus finally measuring up to all the other silver denominations of the era. Small numbers of Proofs were sold to collectors every year from 1858 to 1873, with the production number for 1868 a modest 600 pieces. Virtually immaculate examples, such as the present piece, are of the highest desirability; even more so when cameo frosted. Attractive original toning. (#83718)
