1868-S $5 AU55 NGC. Gold coins struck between 1866 and 1872 are invariably rare in Mint State. They were struck after the two treasure-laden shipwrecks of 1865 (the S.S. Brother Jonathan and the S.S. Republic). They also preceded the large-scale export of freshly minted gold coins to European banks, which began with the 1873 Open 3 double eagle. Since nobody on the West Coast collected gold coins in 1868, the 1868-S is unknown above MS61, and even AU pieces are very scarce. The present piece has suitable luster, a good strike, and no obtrusive abrasions. Census: 15 in 55, 11 finer (2/08).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
