1868-S $20 MS60 NGC. The 1868-S double eagle, with a mintage of 837,500 pieces, is a common issue in circulated grades, particularly in the Very Fine to About Uncirculated range. In Mint State, Douglas Winter and Michael Fuljenz, in their Type Two Double Eagles treatise, say the issue is "very rare." The NGC/PCGS population figures corroborate this, as the two services have seen approximately 40 Uncirculated examples, mainly in MS60 and MS61 grades.
This MS60 specimen displays a better-than-average strike, evidenced by relatively sharp definition in the star radials and the eagle's wing tips, areas typically weak on the issue. Some softness is noted, however, in portions of Liberty's hair. Peach-gold surfaces are tinted with light tan, and exhibit a pleasing, virtually unbroken luster flow. There is a scattering of small contact marks, but perhaps fewer and of less severity than what would be expected both for the designated grade and for the issue. In summary, this is an exceptional example of this condition rarity.

Coin Engraver: James B.
