<B>1868-S $20 AU58 NGC.</B></I> The elusiveness of 1868-S double eagles in higher levels of preservation is perhaps summed up best by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth: "The best example found in many great collections offered over the last few decades has been About Uncirculated. An AU58 coin was the nicest grade of this issue Harry W. Bass, Jr. could muster in his years of searching." The AU58 example here displays bright peach-gold surfaces that have retained considerable luster, and that show sharply defined design elements, save for softness on the first few stars.
