Breen notes two varieties for proof dollars of 1868 in his Encyclopedia of Proof Coins. Both obverse dies were mated with the reverse die used to strike 1867 Breen-3; and interestingly this die was also used on the 1863-4 Motto coins, suggesting that the latter Motto coins were struck in 1868. Breen called this variety his "normal date" with the date punched in high and slanting downward to the right. The shield tip points slightly to the right of the tip of the peak (left serif of the 1). Breen noted this variety was scarce. This is a nice example for the grade and has a good strike. The surfaces are a bright silver color, and there are numerous light, scattered hairlines present that are likely the reason for the PR63 grade from PCGS.
