1868 H10C PR67 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. V-1. Since silver specie payments remained suspended for several years after Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse, it should come as no surprise that the 1868 Half Dime was produced in limited numbers. Just 89,200 pieces were produced, 600 coins of which were proofs. As befits the date, this coin is exceptionally well produced with razor sharp definition in virtually all areas and no striking anomalies like lintmarks or laminations. What's more, the fields are deeply mirrored, a feature that is readily evident beneath the rich endowment of lavender-charcoal toning. Brighter gold and electric-blue colors hug many of the devices, and they are most evident at direct angles. A coin for the collector who appreciates originality, and a Condition Census survivor of this 1860s proof delivery. NGC and PCGS combined have seen only five 1868 Half Dimes in PR67, and not a single coin finer (7/02).From the Philip Kaufman Collection.
