PCGS PR65CAM. Aluminum, plain edge. Rarity in Judd as L7. This is the only cameo proof 65 graded by either service, and is thus one of the finest $5 patterns known. Five coins were graded by PCGS, none higher. 4 graded by NGC, one PF66. It is unknown if any of those coins are resubmittals. Proposed for international coinage discussed at the monetary conference in Paris in 1867, commensurate with the 1867 Paris Expo, which was the first of the large-scale world`s fairs, and was heavily represented by the USA and especially its mining interests, where California and Nevada showed the world for the first time their rich ores and the the attendant metal products that caused the mining rushes. Congress passed a bill that adjusted the weight of the $5 gold piece from 129 grains to 124.9 grains to make it compatible with the 25 French francs. The US $5 gold piece had not circulated at par since late December, 1861. Dies by Paquet. CAC. From the Samuel Berngard Collection. -62104
