1868 25C PR66 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. Briggs 2-B. This obverse die, which was used exclusively for proofs of this date, displays triple punching on the first digit in the date and light recutting inside the upper loop of the final 8. There is also a die break (as struck) on the scroll between the ER in LIBERTY, and a lump (also as produced) attached to the scroll at the bottom on the letter B. The latter two are curious features for a proof die, but, nonetheless, they make it easy for one to distinguish between proofs and business strikes of the 1868 Quarter. This specimen striking displays razor sharp definition in all areas. The reverse die was extensively polished before striking, as evidenced by the numerous swirling striations in the field. The otherwise antique-copper toning lightens to apricot-gray hues on the obverse with a blush of electric-blue color atop Liberty's head. NGC reports a mere eight coins in PR66, and there are none finer. PCGS, on the other hand, has not certified a single specimen above the PR65 level (7/02).From the Philip Kaufman Collection.
