1868 $20 PR64 PCGS. Only 25 proof double eagles were struck in 1868, and of that number estimates range from 7 to 8 pieces surviving (Akers), to as many as 12 (Garrett & Guth). An unquestioned rarity among proof twenties, Akers stated that the 1868 was, "among the rarest of the decade. In fact, only the 1861 is unarguably more rare in proof." This piece is probably one of the first proofs to have been struck, as evidenced not only by the thick mint frost on the devices, but also by the lack of die clashing to the left and right of the tail to the scroll, as seen on some proofs (and business strikes).
This specimen displays razor-sharp striking details seemingly on every design element, down to the last denticle. Careful examination with a magnifier fails to reveal any mentionable hairlines or contact marks, per se, but two or three nearly microscopic pinscratches are noted on each side, which may have prevented the Gem grade assessment. The obverse has a light coating of milky patina, while the reverse is entirely untoned. The devices are heavily frosted, yielding a pleasing cameo contrast when set against the endless depths of watery reflectivity in the fields. This is especially true on the brilliant reverse. Truly a breathtaking coin and one of the most visually appealing gold pieces in a sale replete with magnificent, high grade rarities. Population: 3 in 64, 1 finer (12/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
