1868<$20> PR64 PCGS. In 1868 America was beginning to stabilize under the stewardship of Ulysses S. Grant, who, after many battles in the Civil War, decided to try his hand at politics. Grant was more adapted to the battlefield than politics, but he managed to serve two terms as President, until 1877.
A magnificent example of this very rare date in proof. Note the strong frost on the devices which provides the basis for the contrast between the mirror fields. Excellent surfaces throughout, with just a few wispy lines precluding a higher grade. The only signs of contact are a couple of very minor surface nicks located below the CA of AMERICA. A blush of light milky haze appears over most of the obverse. Close examination will note a tiny projection on a dentil just below the outer star point of the fourth star on the obverse. The Philadelphia Mint reports a scant 25 pieces were coined in proof, and perhaps a few went unsold or were otherwise lost to numismatics today. The combined NGC and PCGS population reports (including the various normal, Cameo and Ultra/Deep Cameo designations) show a total of 11 examples through PR64, with a scant four higher of this issue. We should also note that this near-Gem is encapsulated in an earlier-generation PCGS holder, with a pale-green label. A grand total of 15 have been graded by the combined services, so perhaps 15 to 20 exist in all grades. A tremendous opportunity for the advanced numismatist, as quality 19-century proof gold is seldom available. Population: 3 in 64, 1 finer (6/06).
