<B>1868 $20 AU58 NGC.</B></I> The 1868 double eagle, with a mintage of fewer than 100,000 pieces, is a scarce issue in any grade. Most survivors are in Very Fine or Extremely Fine condition. AU examples become quite scarce, especially high-end coins. Mint State specimens are rare (indeed, NGC and PCGS combined have seen fewer than 10 Uncirculated pieces). The AU58 example in this lot exhibits bright yellow-gold surfaces that retain ample luster, and that display well defined design elements. The ticks scattered about each side do not detract, and are typical for a lightly circulated, heavy gold coin.
