1868<$2 1/2> PR65 Cameo PCGS. This is one of the nicest survivors from a Proof mintage of 25 coins, all coined on February 20, 1868. Perhaps half of the mintage survives today. In the Eliasberg catalog, Dave Bowers noted that, at the time, fewer 1868 Proof Quarter Eagles had appeared than the more famous 1863 Quarter Eagles, a Proof-only date. The surfaces are light yellow with a few tiny flecks or flakes. This is a splendid Gem Cameo Proof with excellent contrast between the mirrored fields and lustrous devices. A small toning patch in the upper reverse fields positively identifies the pedigree. Planchet flakes at the E of UNITED and elsewhere also serve to identify the pedigree of this example. This example is the single finest Proof 1868 Quarter Eagle certified by NGC.
Ex:Lorin G. Parmelee (New York Coin & Stamp Co., 6/1890); William H.
