1868 1C PR66 Red and Brown NGC. Unlike many proof
1868<1C> PR66 Red and Brown NGC. Unlike many proofs of this issue, this coin does not show a medallic alignment. However, the reverse is perhaps 10% off a coin-turn alignment, leading one to speculate that the reverse die was loose and rotated until it turned 180 degrees, at which time it was tightened again and the remainder of the production run was struck with that alignment. The fields are moderately reflective with frosted, sharply struck devices, making for a nice contrast. Light golden-brown patina bathes each side, and displays undertones of bluish color. As of March 2005, NGC and PCGS together have certified a total of 13 coins in this grade and color designation, with none finer. Population: 9 in 66, 0 finer (3/05).
