Partial 1868 Proof Set PR61 to PR65 NGC. The set includes:
1868 Indian Cent PR64 Red NGC. Struck with nearly medal turn, this well struck and unabraded cent has light orange-gold color and a few minuscule flyspecks.
1868 Two Cent Piece PR65 Red and Brown NGC. A beautiful, exactingly struck Gem with pleasing rose-red and pumpkin-gold toning. Mark-free, and carbon is practically nonexistent.
1868 Three Cent Silver PR61 NGC. A needle-sharp specimen with cream-gray patina and a few faint obverse field marks. The reverse is well preserved. A low mintage date.
1868 Three Cent Nickel PR64 Cameo NGC. A flashy near-Gem with light almond-gold toning and a precise strike. Minor carbon is all that limits the grade.
1868 Three Cent Nickel Pattern, Judd-618, Pollock-687, R.4, PR63 NGC. Similar to the issued design, but modifications include a lack of ribs on the Roman numerals. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. A boldly struck pearl-gray piece with a mildly granular charcoal-gray streak to the right of the wreath bow.
1868 Shield Nickel PR64 NGC. Caramel-gold and ice-blue tints visit the mark-free and flashy fields. A minor spot is noted near the N in UNITED. The date is lightly repunched.
1868 Five Cent Pattern, Judd-633, Pollock-705, R.4, PR65 NGC. The high date Pollock variant. The design is much like the issued three cent nickel, but Liberty has a star on her coronet, the Roman numeral V dominates the reverse, and the upper reverse has the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll topped by a Maltese cross. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Lovely lemon-gold and cherry-red toning visits the unperturbed and suitably struck surfaces.
1868 Seated Half Dime PR63 NGC. Precisely struck and flashy with variegated olive-tan toning. Attractive for the grade. A low mintage date. Only 600 proofs were struck, the same reported mintage as the other non-patterns in the present set.
1868 Seated Dime PR64 NGC. An exquisitely struck specimen that boasts good reflectivity and unabraded surfaces. Peripheral charcoal-gold toning deepens on the reverse near 4 o'clock.
1868 Seated Quarter PR64 NGC. Fully struck and nicely mirrored with dappled gunmetal-gray and olive toning. Proofs and business strikes combined for only 30,000 pieces.
1868 Seated Half Dollar PR64 Cameo NGC. A precisely struck and nearly brilliant near-Gem with radiant devices and glassy fields. High quality for the certified grade.

Coin Engraver: James B.
