1868 10C Ten Cents, Judd-647, Pollock-720, Low R.
1868<10C> Ten Cents, Judd-647, Pollock-720, Low R.6, PR66 NGC. The obverse features the almost identical design used on Large Cents from 1843 to 1857, while the reverse is similar to the Coronet Type Large Cent except the wreath is smaller and open and TEN CENTS is in the center of the wreath. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. This is a fascinating piece for blundered obverse and reverse dies. Remnants of two date digits appear within the dentils on the obverse below the first 8 and the 6. On the reverse, the top of a drastically misplaced M appears between the tops of AM. The reverse blunder has been described by us before, but to the best of our knowledge, the stray digits in the dentils has never previously been described. This is a Gem Proof that is quite sharply struck, unusual for the nickel composition. The surfaces are reflective, but not deeply mirrored. Proofs generally are struck on polished planchets from similarly polished dies, the combination giving the usual deep mirrored fields. This example was likely struck on a polished planchet, but from an unpolished die, or vice-versa.
