Original Thomas Nast  ( 1840 - 1902 ) wood cut engraving,  post Civil War, Reconstruction era newspaper cartoon, from an April 13, 1867 edition of Harper's Weekly Newspaper. "We Accept The Situation", along with ads of the day also featured on the page. The scene - an African American man, Union soldier, proudly displays a slip of paper labeled "A VOTE", while a disgruntled former Confederate soldier, with a frown on his face, holds a torn slip of paper at his feet labeled "NO VOTE", stands before a broadsheet "Military Bill" with the notice: "Except such as may be disfranchised for participation in the Rebellion or for felony".
