1867. Rays. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. A frosty white example that shows glittering mirror fields, and boldly frosted devices. The Shield nickel was first launched in 1866, the concept of the nickel and copper planchet was hatched because the silver coins half dimes on up through dollars had disappeared from circulation with the economic pressures of the Civil War. In order to facilitate small transactions, another type of coin was needed. Nickel miner Wharton offered to provide as much raw nickel as the mint could use, and given that people were hoarding all the silver coins it was believed that perhaps the nickel and copper coins would be more likely to stay in circulation and not fall into the hoarding pattern ongoing. This is one of the rare early Proofs struck in the second year of production, with the original design that includes the glory rays around the large central 5 feature. These Rays caused the dies to chip, crack and break much more quickly than on other coins produced at the mint, in part due to the hardness of the nickel alloy used to produce these coins. This one is absolutely one of the finest known today! A delightful example of this prized rarity and one that will certainly entice spirited bidding. Only 65 pieces struck. Pop 7; 4 finer, 2 in 66 Cameo, 2 in 66 Star Cameo. Estimated Value 25,000 - UP
