1867-S $20 MS61 NGC. Struck too late to participate in 1867-S[$20] MS61 NGC.
1867-S<$20> MS61 NGC. Struck too late to participate in any of the three major shipwreck hoards of double eagles (Central America, Republic, Brother Jonathon), yet struck too early to be shipped abroad and spared as bullion reserves. While 920,000 double eagles were struck at San Francisco in 1867, nearly all survivors paid dues in commerce, and are in XF and AU grades. The present lustrous and fortunate piece has a light copper streak on the right obverse, but the eye appeal is impressive, since few marks are noticeable. Possibly a misplaced date variety, with traces of presumed digits beneath the bust truncation above the prominent 6 in the date. Housed in an early generation holder.
