1867-S $20 MS60 PCGS. Like the other Reconstruction-era double eagles produced at the San Francisco Mint, this issue had a fairly substantial mintage approaching 1 million pieces, but the West Coast's gold-centered economy resulted in heavy circulation of all such denominations, which rendered Uncirculated survivors elusive. This 1867-S representative is highly lustrous and boldly struck. The pink-tinged green-gold surfaces display numerous small marks and a number of light to moderate abrasions. Several dark-green specks are noted within Liberty's hair detail. Still, the surfaces exhibit no trace of wear, and this piece offers an opportunity for the discerning specialist to acquire a Mint State representative of this conditionally challenging S-mint issue. Population: 6 in 60, 6 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
