1867 S$1 PR66 Cameo NGC. According to Bowers (1993), the Philadelphia Mint used four different die combinations to deliver 625 proof Seated Dollars in 1867. The present coin is an example of the variety that the author describes as No.2, and it was struck from the same reverse die as proof 1866 Motto Seated Dollars of Bowers' No.2 and No.3 varieties. While this die marriage is the one most often encountered on extant proofs of the 1867 issue, no varieties of this specimen Silver Dollar are common at the PR66 Cameo level of preservation. What's more, the 1867 is an elusive coin as a business strike with Mint State survivors being particularly rare. As such, we anticipate strong demand for the Kaufman representative from high quality Seated Dollar date collectors and 19th century proof specialists alike. Heavily frosted with sharp striking definition, the devices seem to float atop illimitable depth of reflectivity in the fields. There is a dusting of medium gold iridescence on the obverse with flickers of similar color confined to select rim areas on the reverse. A few blushes of pale powder-blue patina are also seen at the upper obverse and lower reverse borders. There are no distracting hairlines or contact marks to report, but one can seen a useful reverse pedigree marker over the N in ONE in the form of an as struck lintmark. Population: 3 in 66, only two finer as Cameo (2/03).From the Philip Kaufman Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
