1867 Pattern Five Cents. Copper, plain edge PCGS PR63BN
This is an important and prized trial strike of the regular die piece of the first or "With Rays" type of shield nickel, with stars and rays encircling the large 5 of the denomination, CENTS below along the rim. Struck in copper and described as Rarity-6 by Judd, or 13 to 31 pieces believed to have been struck. (Judd's rarity rating, which everyone uses today on regular coinage as well as Patterns, referred to the number of pieces made and not the number known or in collector's hands which, in most instances, is far fewer in the case of the Patterns.)

"The estimate of comparative rarity," writes Judd, "was based on the number of pieces in the permanent collections or in the hands of collectors and dealers, a list of the duplicates from the Woodin collection and the frequency with which a piece appears on the market."
