1867 G$1 PR63 Cameo NGC. The proof 1867 gold doll
1867<G$1> PR63 Cameo NGC. The proof 1867 gold dollar is an infrequently offered coin. Only 50 proofs were produced and its actual rarity is more on a level with other dates with mintages in the range of 30 or even fewer pieces. We have not offered a proof 1867 gold dollar at public auction since 1989, and a quick scan of records from other companies shows that this issue has come up for sale on average no more than once per year over the past 25 years. Breen estimated that 15-18 proofs are known today and Taglione stated that as many as 17 pieces might be extant in all grades. The fields are very deeply mirrored, and on this coin the devices display a generous amount of mint frost that gives a two-toned cameo appearance. Close examination shows a few light hairlines but there are no other post-striking impairments worthy of mention. For pedigree purposes, there is a shallow, barely noticeable planchet flake directly below Liberty's ear and in front of the forward wave of the first curl beneath the ear. Rich orange-gold coloration is seen over each side with a slight intermixture of lilac over the devices. A very rare opportunity for the gold specialist. Population: 1 in 63, 2 finer (3/05).
