1867 Autograph Letter With Travel and American Indian Content. Four pages, 6.5” x 8”, New York, June 26, 1867, in ink. The subject matter of this letter would lead one to believe that the writer, one Maria S. Wright, is well educated and affluent. The spelling is impeccable and the content speaks to subjects of wealth. Maria writes: “It is quite in the fashion now to go to Europe. So many of our friends have gone. I believe it has become more uncommon to remain at home.” She speaks of a brother who “is quite in the notion of buying western land - thinks it would be such a good investment and believes it probable that Columbus Nebraska will one day be the Capital of the United States.” She conveys accounts of her brother's encounters with Indians: “He tells me he saw Indian women employed chopping wood for the Pacific Railroad - the men are so idle they will not work. Stopping at one of the stations, they were visited by some Indians. One of Willies friends gave a small piece of silver to one of the men who immediately offered him his Squaw in return. Was he not a devoted husband?” An interesting letter, lightly stained, with the usual fold creases, else very good. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
