1867 Assay Commission Medal. PR63 Brown Uncertified. Julian AC-3, R.5. Copper, 33.5 mm., 328.7 grains. A bust of Liberty faces right with hair bound by a wreath, and LIBERTY inscribed on a scroll along the base. Around, MINT OF THE UNITED STATES, and below, PHILADELPHIA. The reverse has a wreath of laurel around ANNUAL ASSAY 1861 on three lines. Brilliant mirrored surfaces with light cameo contrast. Both sides have light tan color with blue, lilac, and iridescent toning.
After Snowden left office in 1861, he was replaced by James Pollock who served as the Mint Director from 1861 to 1866 (and later from 1869 to 1873). Pollock was less enamored by the idea of medals for the Assay Commission, thus none were issued from 1862 to 1866. The new Mint Director was William Millward, who was more willing to continue the series. The 1867 medal was the third in the series, and used the same design of 1860 and 1861.
