1867[5C] Rays PR64 Cameo PCGS.
1867<5C> Rays PR64 Cameo PCGS. The 1867 With Rays Proof nickel is one of an elite group of 19th century Proof rarities and keeps company with such proof rarities as the 1864-L Indian cent, the 1864 Small Motto two-cent piece, and the 1884 and 1885 trade dollars. This is a splendid example and one of the rarest issues of the denomination in Proof format. Both sides are very sharply defined as they should be with pale gold toning over attractive surfaces. A few microscopic spots and hairlines keep this from consideration as a Gem. The fields are moderately mirrored as usual for this particular issue, while the devices have satiny luster. The contrast is sufficient for the PCGS Cameo designation. The rarity of this issue dates to a January 21, 1867 order to discontinue the With Rays design in favor of a less complicated reverse. Very few proof nickels had been struck in the first three weeks of the year, and Chief Coiner Archibald Loudon Snowden refused to include any of those in proof sets of the year. Of course, today we can't help but wonder if Snowden may have recognized the profit potential from this rarity and keep such coins for himself. It is most likely the case that between 20 and 30 Proofs of this issue were struck, and today approximately 15 are known. In his Complete Encyclopedia, Walter Breen described two different die states from a single die pair. Today, it is known that there were at least two different die varieties utilized to strike these proof coins.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
