1867 5C Rays PR62 PCGS. Examination of this coin shows that the diagnostics of this piece are not consistent with the original strikings from February 8, 1867. This piece appears to have been struck from a second die pairing and may have been struck as late as 1869. In spite of the generally accepted mintage for this issue of 25 proofs, more than that number are extant and today it is believed that at least 50 coins were struck of this issue judging from the numbers certified by the major services.
This piece shows dusky gray-lilac toning over both sides. The fields are subdued on the obverse but show noticeable reflectivity on the reverse. Fully struck, as one would expect from a proof striking. Population: 2 in 62, 37 finer (12/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
