<B>1867 5C No Rays PR65 NGC.</B></I> A Gem striking of this popular type coin, produced after the chief coiner at the Mint refused to strike more pieces with the crowded With Rays design, making the 1867 With Rays a classic rarity. Many series specialists are unaware that two reverses exist for this issue, the present coin being the one with a star centered beneath AM, the more common Reverse Style D (according to the Bowers <I>Guide Book of Shield and Liberty Nickels).</B></I> The rarer Reverse Style C shows a star centered beneath the first A in AMERICA. This silver-white coin shows light field haze on the reverse, but is still quite attractive, with near-cameo contrast.
