1867<5C> Shield Five Cents, Judd-573a, Pollock-647, R.8, PR64 Brown PCGS. The first generation PCGS holder is mislabeled J-578a. The obverse features the shield design used to coin regular issue 1867 nickels. On the reverse, 5 CENTS is within a laurel wreath, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above in tiny letters. The letters of CENTS are in a straight line. Struck in copper with a plain edge. This is an exceeding rare pattern listed by both Pollock and Bowers as an R.8 with only two examples known. This specimen displays colorful mint-green and crimson toning over deep copper-brown surfaces. A couple of tiny carbon flecks are noted, but the really do not detract.
