1867<$5> AU53 PCGS. As specie payments remained suspended through the early 1870s, little bullion reached the mints even after the end of the Civil War. It is not surprising, therefore, that the Philadelphia mint coined only 6,920 Half Eagles in 1867. This issue is equal in rarity to the 1866 and survivors of both issues are apt to grade either VF or XF. This is a superior coin in terms of technical quality and the surfaces betray only light wear across the highest features. Both sides reveal ample remnants of the prooflike finish despite an overall reddish-gold appearance. The surfaces are moderately abraded, yet free of individually mentionable detractions.
