1867 1C MS65 Red PCGS. The 1867 is a lower-mintage date (9.821 million coins), as the Mint put most of its resources into the production of the new nickel five cent piece. Still, these cents were minted in a high enough quantity that they did not initially attract collector interest. Today, Mint State examples of this date are very rare in full red (Richard Snow, 2006).
The Red Gem in this lot displays copper-gold luster and occasional splashes of deeper orange. A well executed strike translates into sharp definition on the design elements, including clarity on all four diamonds. A few light flecks on each side might help to preclude an even higher grade. Housed in a green-label holder. Population: 18 in 65 Red 1 finer (7/07).
From The Santa Fe Collection.

Coin Engraver: James B.
