1867 1C MS65 Red PCGS. David Bowers, in his treatise A Buyer's and Enthusiast's Guide to Flying Eagle and Indian Cents, says of the availability of the 1867 in Mint State: "Quite Elusive. Most are brown or red and brown. Original bright red specimens were rare years ago and are even more elusive today; most 'Brilliant Uncirculated' pieces on the market have been dipped."
The original lustrous surfaces of this MS65 Red example yield bright orange-gold color, and a scattering of light toning spots. An attentive strike brings out good detail in most of the design features, except for softness in the tips of the headdress feathers and the horizontal lines of the shield. The four diamonds are bold. A few minor obverse marks do not detract.
From The Santa Fe Collection.

Coin Engraver: James B.
