1867 10C MS67 PCGS. Variety 103. The 1867 is a well-known rarity among Seated dime collectors. Below XF it is even scarcer than the 1874-CC, and it is always under intense collector demand as it has the lowest mintage of any regular issue Seated dime. This particular variety is rare and die clashing is always seen on high grade specimens, and so it is with this piece. Greer notes, "I have not seen proofs from this obverse die." The inference we make from this statement is that this obverse die was heavily polished and coins from this die might resemble proofs. This piece is certainly deceptive at first glance. The fields are deeply reflective and the striking details are fully brought up in all areas. However, the aforementioned die clash marks are present and this simply does not square with a proof coin. Rich, variegated russet-rose toning covers both sides with occasional splashes of blue around the margins. A rare opportunity for the specialized collector. Population: 1 in 67, 0 finer (2/05).
