For the rare 1866 Rays date, a uniquely frosted, satin topped shield nickel whose pale golden color mixes with deep watery mirrors on both sides. Attractively struck as well, with not even a hint of softness in the design. This is a classic semi-key within the nickel five-cent series. The coinage of these on 25% nickel, 75% copper alloy planchets were a switch from the previous 90% silver half dimes of essentially the same denomination. The mint struck both styles between 1866 and 1873 before the half dime was dropped. This 1866 is among the choicest around for its grade and early PCGS holder. It may, indeed, be later resubmitted for possibly upgrade.
