A lock-solid frosty gem with strong primary luster and lighter toned highlights on both sides. More than adequately struck for the date, perhaps not 100% so, since this With Rays issue rarely is, but certainly a coin that gets points where fullness of design is concerned. The Rays caused the dies to deteriorate quickly. When the mint decided to do something to improve and extend the use of the dies, the first thought was to remove some of the intricate design. Which is what happened, and which did, in fact, improve things on later No Rays strikes from 1867-83. A scarce two-year Type.
