<B>1866-S<$5> No Motto XF45 NGC.</B></I> Like the similar issues in other gold denominations, the 1866-S No Motto half eagle is an important rarity in the Liberty series of this denomination. The reported mintage of 9,000 coins represents those pieces struck early in the year from reverse dies left over from earlier years. The new With Motto reverse dies did not arrive in San Francisco until mid-April 1866. This example is a pleasing light yellow gold half eagle with pleasing surfaces. Hints of luster and traces of wispy orange toning add to its eye appeal.
