<B>1866-S $5 No Motto AU58 NGC.</B></I> The 1866-S issue of No Motto half eagles was the last of the type, and virtually the entire mintage of 9,000 pieces was pressed into heavy service. Many examples were lost to attrition, and every known piece exhibits some degree of wear; neither NGC nor PCGS has graded a Mint State representative (1/08).<BR> Though it is not a fully Mint coin, this remarkable AU58 exemplar is easily one of the finest survivors of this elusive issue. The strike is bold, and the warm yellow-orange surfaces boast virtually intact luster. A handful of wispy flaws in the fields and a touch of highpoint friction are the only barriers to an even finer designation.
