1866-S $20 No Motto XF45 NGC.<p>The 1866-S No Motto is the rarest regular issue Type One Double Eagle from the San Francisco mint. Approximately 12,000 pieces were struck in February 1866, prior to instructions from Philadelphia to change over to the new Type Two reverse. The true rarity of this issue is not yet widely known but it is actually one of the most challenging Liberty Head Double Eagles of any date to locate in high grade. Twenty or so are known in the various conditions of About Uncirculated and nearly all grade AU50. The 1866-S Without Motto is very rare in AU 53 and extremely rare in AU 55. We do not know of a Mint State example and cannot recall a single piece that we would unhesitatingly grade AU58. This moderately worn example shows weak striking details, but there are good portions of mint luster remaining around the devices. A couple of more obvious abrasions are located on Liberty's cheek.
