1866-S<$20> No Motto XF40 NGC. Aside from the 1861-S Paquet Reverse, there are no formidable stoppers within a San Francisco Liberty double eagle collection. But there is one much better date: the 1866-S No Motto. The Philadelphia Mint made all coinage dies in 1866, and any new Motto reverse dies had to be shipped from Philadelphia to San Francisco. Since no trans-continental railroad yet existed, it took time for the dies to reach the West coast. Since the hard money Western economy required a steady production of double eagles, an estimated 12,000 pieces were struck in 1866 without the reverse Motto. This scarce survivor has the sharpness and luster of a higher grade, but the piece is slightly bright and exhibits distributed obverse marks.
