1866-S $20 No Motto AU53 PCGS.
1866-S $20 No Motto AU53 PCGS. A rare issue in all grades, the 1866-S No Motto is also notable for its status as the final issue of the type. All Philadelphia Mint 1866 Twenties are With Motto, aside from a few patterns that were in fact clandestine mules struck in later years for collectors. However, it took time to transport dies from the East to West coast in those days before the railroads united the nation. The San Francisco Mint struck an estimated 12,000 pieces early in the year without the motto, before the dies with the new reverse had been received. This nicely struck Double Eagle has good luster and no notable abrasions. The obverse has clashmarks (as made) from the shield above the ear, and from the rays below the hair bun. The reverse has a pair of spindly die cracks, as struck. The 1866-S No Motto is unknown in Mint State, and problem-free About Uncirculated pieces are the grade of choice. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
